Absolute Resolve: Inside the Machinery of a Military Operation That Led to a Historic Arrest

Article content

Beyond its political and legal fallout, Operation Absolute Resolve raises a central question: how is a mission of this scale conceived and carried out?

The arrest of Nicolás Maduro and Cilia Flores, both facing federal charges brought by the U.S. Department of Justice, did more than send shockwaves through global politics and the legal system. It also laid bare the operational architecture behind a mission authorities described as extraordinary, defined by its precision, a unified chain of command, and the synchronized use of air, land, maritime, and space capabilities.

At this point, the focus has shifted. Less on the outcome, more on the method. Operation Absolute Resolve was presented as the culmination of months of interagency planning. According to official information reviewed by La Tilde, the Department of War acted in support of the Department of Justice under direct orders from President Donald Trump, with the objective of securing the arrest of those charged.

The operation was monitored in real time by the president, Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth, and Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff General Dan “Razin” Caine, alongside other senior administration officials, from a secure location at Mar-a-Lago in Palm Beach, Florida.

The president himself described it as “an extraordinary military operation.” The phrasing was deliberate. According to official accounts, the mission unfolded within a tightly defined time window, during the early hours of January 2, 2026, under an operational tempo pushed to the limits of precision.

Full-spectrum integration

At the core of the operation was the integration of human, technological, and logistical resources under a single execution chain. Authorities said interagency coordination had begun months earlier, drawing on decades of experience in managing complex operations.

Personnel from every branch of the armed forces took part, alongside the intelligence community and federal law enforcement agencies. Soldiers, sailors, airmen, marines, and members of the Space Force operated in concert, in what officials described as an unprecedented joint effort.

Air power played a decisive role. Nearly 150 aircraft, including helicopters, fixed-wing planes, and drones, supported the mission. The fleet included F-22, F-35, and F-18 fighter jets; EA-18 and E-2 aircraft; B-1 bombers; and multiple unmanned systems. This structure enabled full control of the airspace, continuous surveillance, and precise support for forces on the ground.

A low-angle, wide shot of two modern military fighter jets parked side-by-side on an airfield tarmac. The aircraft's powerful nose lights and ground indicators emit intense white and bluish lens flares. On the edges of the runway, distant silhouettes of military and ground crew personnel can be seen monitoring the pre-flight operations. The entire scene unfolds under a dramatic twilight sky with gradients shifting from a bright orange horizon to a dark purple hue topped with heavy clouds, capturing the preparatory phase and tactical readiness of a high-security night aviation mission.

Precision and risk control

Authorities stressed that only the actions strictly necessary to meet operational objectives were carried out, with a focus on protecting U.S. personnel and law enforcement officers. They reported no known civilian casualties and stated that noncombatants were not intentionally targeted.

Each intervention, they said, was designed to minimize collateral risk in what was described as a highly complex environment.

Following the operation, the U.S. Department of Transportation lifted restrictions on Caribbean airspace at midnight on Sunday, January 4, allowing commercial flights to gradually resume. Airlines were notified and adjusted their schedules in line with established protocols.

“Nicolás Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores, are defendants now in the custody of the Department of Justice. Under the president’s direction, the Department of War will continue to defend the homeland, protect regional partners, and uphold law and order across the Western Hemisphere,” authorities said.

Beyond its legal implications, Absolute Resolve is already being viewed as a contemporary case of large-scale operational coordination, where rigorous planning, accumulated experience, and full-spectrum synchronization converged in an execution officials describe as controlled, measurable, and without precedent.
